Manufacturing enterprises is a country's economic mainstay. However, their longtime extensive growth pattern of “high growth and high emission” has brought huge environment pollution and restricted sustainable development. Under the circumstance of carbon reduction and global green development, market-incentive environmental regulation (MER) has attracted the attention of scholars and become a kind of important methods of encouraging manufacturing enterprises green growth. Presently, two fairly distinct viewpoints of “Follow Cost” and “Porter Hypothesis” both have their own supportive research results, and the explanation for the role of MER is completely opposite. What's more, empirical research at the enterprise level is scarce. Therefore, this study makes a further analysis from the perspective of enterprises heterogeneous innovation ability. Guided by the classic theory of “Follow Cost” and “Porter Hypothesis”, this study aims to evaluate the applicable conditions of MER's environmental improvement effect, and testing the differential impact mechanism of MER on enterprise Green Total Factor Productivity (GTFP), enterprise Green Technological Change (GTC) and enterprise Green Efficiency Change (GEC). All these give theoretical and empirical supplementation for the rationality of related theories. This study examines the hypotheses and mechanism according to 1220 Chinese manufacturing listed companies data 2011–2020. The empirical results indicate that: (1) In short term, MER has a significant positive impact on GTC, and a significant negative impact on GTFP and GEC. (2) As innovation driven factors, both enterprise R&D investment and innovation output play the mediating role. (3) Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the impact mechanism varies depending on enterprise industry-type, location and digital level. Thus, policymakers should develop appropriate MER policies, and manufacturing enterprises should strengthen technological innovation to help achieve environmental sustainability and profit performance.

An experimental investigation of the impact of sustainable ERP systems implementation on sustainability performance

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the influence of sustainable enterprise resource planning (S-ERPs) systems implementation on sustainability performance. Design/methodology/approach A 1 × 2 experiment was conducted, involving a sample of 72 professional accountants enrolled in MPA, MBA and DBA programs at two prominent Egyptian universities. Simple linear regression was used to analyze the data. Findings The results reveal positive relationships between the implementation of S-ERPs and economic, environmental and social sustainability performance. Research limitations/implications Considering the research methodology used, which relies on a laboratory experiment design; nevertheless, empirical data derived from a quasi-experiment conducted in a real-world context would offer valuable insights into the existing literature. Practical implications For manufacturing sector managers, the results offer value as organizations can benefit from S-ERP adoption in the internal and external integration of sustainability functions. The findings also provide decision-makers in the manufacturing context, particularly in emerging countries, with tangible reasons to consider S-ERP adoption for holistic sustainability benefits including waste management, resource consumption reduction and management of sustainable supply chain complexities. Further, the findings provide valuable insights for ERP vendors on how they can develop their ERP packages to align with software sustainability criteria. Originality/value This study is among the few that experimentally investigates the influence of S-ERPs implementation on sustainability performance within the manufacturing sector, especially in an emerging context such as Egypt. This unique contribution provides valuable insights into the complex connection between technology adoption and sustainability outcomes.

Eco-dynamic capability: A surest way to sustainability performance of SMEs?

PurposeTo endure and cope in the rapidly changing environment, it is required of firms to gain a deeper acquisition of knowledge on market dynamics and subsequently concentrate on corporations' capacity to create, restructure and integrate their internal and external competences. Hence, the objective of this study is to investigate the influence of eco-dynamic capability (EDC) on the sustainability performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).Design/methodology/approachStructured questionnaires were used to obtain primary data. The data were solicited from 500 employees and owner-managers of SMEs. The study’s hypotheses were tested using standard multiple regression through IBM SPSS Statistics (version 24).FindingsThe study revealed that EDC has a substantial positive effect on the economic, social and environmental sustainability performance dimensions.Originality/valueThe focus of this study is on EDC. Thus, although dynamic capability has been the subject of substantial study, little is known regarding the effect of EDC on the economic sustainability performance (ESP) (financial), environmental sustainability performance (ENSP) and social sustainability performance (SSP) of SMEs, predominantly amongst SMEs in emerging economies.

The Role of Sustainability Orientation and Sustainable Environmental Performance in Improving Sustainable Economic Performance of the Batik Industry

The batik industry is starting to develop rapidly, and its contribution is improving the Indonesian economy. On the other hand, the batik industry produces waste that pollutes the environment. Batik SMEs do not realize the importance of sustainability orientation, and that some consumers prefer environmentally friendly batik products. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sustainability orientation and sustainable economic performance, both directly and through sustainable environmental performance. The study was conducted in Surabaya, as well as the Regencies of Tuban, Lamongan, Sidoarjo, and Jombang. With the purposive sampling technique, 32 Batik SMEs were selected with 89 respondents. SEM-PLS was the method of data analysis used in this investigation. According to data analysis findings, sustainable economic performance benefits from sustainable environmental performance. Sustainable environmental performance is positively impacted by sustainability orientation. Sustainable economic performance is not directly impacted by sustainability orientation. Sustainability orientation indirectly influences sustainability economic performance through sustainable environmental performance. Increasing sustainability orientation can increase sustainable environmental and economic performance for realising the green batik industry.

Green logistics and circular economy in alleviating CO2 emissions: Does waste generation and GDP growth matter in EU countries?

The integration of Green Logistics (GL) and Circular Economy (CE) have been recognized as critical concepts for achieving sustainable economic and environmental performance. However, there is a lack of understanding on the combine impacts of CE and GL in alleviating CO2 emissions in pioneering nations relying on these concepts. This study examines the role of CE and GL sustainable in curbing CO2 emissions of 13 developed European Union (EU) countries from 2000 to 2020. The neoclassical growth and IPAT models, including the pool mean autoregressive distributed lags (PMG-ARDL) and the vector error correction model (VECM) are employed to estimate the short- and long-run effects and heterogeneous causal relationships. The long-run results reveal that CE and GL can mitigate CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions, while the generation of municipal waste (GMW) has negative impact on the environment. Moreover, the long-run relationship between economic growth, CE, GL, and GMW validates the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. The study also confirms a bidirectional causality between CE, GL, and CO2 emissions over the long run. This study proposes a model for assessing the impact of CE and GL initiatives on environmental performance and sustainability in both pioneering developed regions and emerging economies yet to embrace green growth concepts.

LEVERAGING PROJECT MANAGEMENT TOOLS FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN HVAC OPERATIONS: A PATH TO CLIMATE RESILIENCE

Firstly, the review delves into the pressing need for energy conservation in HVAC operations amidst escalating concerns over climate change and its adverse impacts. The imperative to minimize energy consumption in buildings, particularly through HVAC systems, is highlighted as a pivotal step towards achieving climate resilience and sustainability goals. Subsequently, the review outlines the role of project management tools in orchestrating effective strategies to enhance energy efficiency within HVAC operations. By employing techniques such as project scheduling, risk management, and resource allocation, project managers can streamline the implementation of energy-efficient measures, thereby optimizing HVAC system performance and reducing carbon emissions. Moreover, the review underscores the importance of data analytics and technological advancements in augmenting the efficacy of project management tools for energy efficiency in HVAC operations. Leveraging real-time data monitoring, predictive analytics, and IoT-enabled devices enables proactive maintenance and continuous optimization of HVAC systems, thereby maximizing energy savings and bolstering climate resilience. Furthermore, the review elucidates the potential benefits and challenges associated with the adoption of project management tools for energy efficiency in HVAC operations. While improved cost-effectiveness, environmental sustainability, and operational performance emerge as primary benefits, challenges such as initial investment costs, technological complexities, and organizational inertia necessitate careful consideration. This review advocates for the integration of project management tools as a viable approach to foster energy efficiency in HVAC operations, thereby paving the way towards enhanced climate resilience and sustainability in built environments. By embracing innovative methodologies and technological solutions, stakeholders can mitigate energy consumption, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and fortify infrastructure against the impacts of climate change.

تأثير التدريب والتطوير الاخضر في الاداء المستدام

تهدف الدراسة الحالية إلى اختبار تأثير التدريب والتطوير الأخضر على الأداء المستدام واستكشاف آثاره داخل وخارج وزارة البيئة العراقية. تدور المشكلة الأساسية للبحث حول مدى تنفيذ التدريب والتطوير الأخضر والأداء المستدام في الوزارة (ما هي طبيعة العلاقة بين التدريب والتطوير الأخضر والأداء المستدام في الوزارة؟). لتوضيح العلاقة بين المتغيرات البحثية، صُيِّغت فرضيتان رئيسيتان بالإضافة إلى فرضيات فرعية. تهدف الدراسة أيضًا إلى تقييم مستوى اهتمام الوزارة بالمتغيرات البحثية وتقديم توصيات رئيسية لتعزيز الأداء المستدام من خلال اعتماد التدريب والتطوير الأخضر. تم استخدام المنهج الوصفي-التحليلي في هذه الدراسة، حيث تم جمع البيانات من عينة عشوائية تتألف من 250 فردًا، وتم جمع 150 استبيانًا. استخدم الباحث مجموعة من الأساليب الإحصائية باستخدام برامج مثل Excel وSPSS V28 وAmos V25.تشير أهم نتائج الدراسة إلى أن الأداء البيئي المستدام يمكن تعزيزه من خلال التركيز على التدريب وتطوير الممارسات البيئية الخضراء بشكل عام. كما لوحظ تأثير ملحوظ لكلا المتغيرين (التدريب والتطوير الأخضر والأداء المستدام)، مع إيلاء الأولوية والتفضيل للأداء المستدام في التنفيذ العملي على التدريب وتطوير البيئة. بناءً على النتائج، يُوصَى بتحسين الأداء المستدام من خلال تنفيذ برامج التدريب والتطوير البيئي داخل وزارة البيئة، مع التركيز أيضًا على المتغيرات البحثية المرتبطة بالأداء المستدام.

Environmental ethics and green practices in the manufacturing sector: The role of green innovation and environmental policy

AbstractNumerous studies have indicated that incorporating an environmental ethic (EE), green innovation (GI), and environmental policy (EnP) can enhance a company's sustainable performance, that is, environmental performance (EP) and economic performance (EcP) in the manufacturing industry. However, to encourage eco‐friendly production and processes, it is crucial to promote sustainable practices across different industries. Nevertheless, some researchers have overlooked the significance of these implementations. Integrating these practices into the manufacturing sector can be challenging. To address this issue, this study has developed an empirical model that assesses two pillars of sustainable performance in the Jordanian manufacturing industry. The study analyzes the direct correlation between a firm's EE, GI, and sustainable performance. It also examines whether GI plays a mediating role in the relationship between company EE and sustainable performance and if EnP moderates the relationship between GI and sustainable performance. The study collected data from 386 respondents belonging to various manufacturing industries in Jordan and analyzed it using SmartPLS. The research revealed that a manufacturing firm's EE is significantly boosted by GI, EP, and EcP. These findings suggest that companies with higher EE are more likely to innovate sustainably and perform better in terms of sustainability. In particular, the study found that GI plays a mediating role between a firm's EE and its sustainable performance. Furthermore, the impact of EnP on the relationship between GI and EP was mixed, showing a moderating effect on the former but not on EcP. The study provides valuable insights into the implementation of green practices in the manufacturing sector and discusses policy implications for manufacturers.

Investigating the influence of lean manufacturing approach on environmental performance: A systematic literature review

AbstractThe growing emphasis on environmental sustainability has drawn considerable attention from both academia and industry practitioners. Factors such as escalating energy costs, heightened environmental degradation, and a burgeoning market demand for eco-friendly practices have compelled businesses to reassess their strategies through a green lens. Given that Lean principles are rooted in optimising operations to minimise waste across design and production processes, their synergy with the green paradigm is evident. However, despite the intuitive connection between Lean methodologies and environmental sustainability, the scholarly exploration of their impact remains largely underdeveloped. This research seeks to bridge this gap by conducting a comprehensive systematic literature review to dissect the current understanding of Lean manufacturing practices and their influence on environmental sustainability performance. The selected papers were meticulously screened and grouped into three clusters using the PRISMA diagram methodology. The primary objective was to discern the tangible effects of Lean practices on eco-efficiency performance and explore integrating Lean manufacturing principles with broader sustainable manufacturing approaches. A structured matrix was created to categorise and visualise the identified impacts gleaned from the initial articles. Nevertheless, the review revealed significant gaps in understanding, particularly regarding the factors that shape the efficacy of Lean manufacturing tools in enhancing eco-efficiency performance. The findings underscore the need for further research to unravel these complexities and delineate the mechanisms through which Lean practices contribute to environmental sustainability. Several avenues for future research have been delineated, focusing on how Lean manufacturing practices can be leveraged to support eco-efficiency performance effectively. While the preliminary findings shed light on the promising intersection between Lean principles and environmental sustainability, they also underscore the imperative for continued scholarly inquiry to unlock the full potential of Lean methodologies in fostering a greener industrial landscape.

Sustainability Environmental Performance Future Investment for Company Value

This study investigates the financial dynamics of 182 manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during the period 2019 to 2022, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This study uses a quantitative approach using SPSS for regression analysis. The dataset covers the turbulent years of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing insights into the resilience and adaptability of companies during this period. This study reveals that while capital structure and dividend policy do not significantly affect firm value, firm growth, profitability and investment decisions exert a differential influence. Notably, environmental performance moderates the impact of growth and profitability on firm value, but does not significantly affect relationships involving capital structure, dividend policy, or investment decisions. This research contributes to the growing landscape of financial analysis by incorporating environmental considerations as a moderating factor. It underscores the importance of sustainable practices in improving financial performance and firm value, especially in the context of global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design and evaluation of semi self-compacting cold mix polyurethane mixture for steel bridge deck pavement

To enhance the environmental sustainability and pavement performance of steel bridge deck paving, a novel semi self-compacting cold mix polyurethane mixture (CMPU-10) for steel bridge deck paving was specifically designed and evaluated. Herein, this study presents the first comprehensive documentation of the research process involved in the mix design of CMPU-10. Initially, based on the theory of maximum density curve, a gradation with a Talbot index (n) of 0.40 was identified as the preliminary gradation for designing CMPU-10 by void ratio, compressive strength and slump tests. Subsequently, the aggregate grade-by-grade filling test revealed the critical influence of sieve sizes (0.075 mm, 0.6 mm, and 2.36 mm) on the mixture dense degree. From these findings, an in-depth analysis of the effects of aggregate passage under the key sieve on the degree of mixture density, compressive strengths, and flow properties led to the determination of the gradation range of CMPU-10. The optimum binder-aggregate ratio for the median gradation was determined to be 9.2%. Finally, wheel tracking, semi-circular bending (SCB) and freeze-thaw splitting tests showed that the designed CMPU-10 exhibits superior high-temperature stability performance, low-temperature cracking resistance and moisture susceptibility compared to the TAF epoxy asphalt mixture (EA-10). This paper not only provides a new potential low-carbon material for steel bridge deck paving projects, but also establishes a theoretical foundation for the optimization design and promotion polyurethane mixture.

Environmental regulations in eco-innovation and sustainable performance in Mexican Automotive Industry

In the literature, evidence has been provided that establishes that compliance with environmental regulations promotes the adoption and implementation of eco-innovation activities in manufacturing firms, since through this type of activities not only are the costs associated with the discharges of pollutants, but also increases the level of sustainable performance of companies. However, little is known about the relationship between environmental regulations, eco-innovation, and sustainable performance, since there are few studies published in the literature that have focused on their analysis, so this study aims to fill this existing gap, and generate new knowledge of the relationship between these three constructs through an extensive review of the literature. Likewise, a questionnaire was distributed to a sample of 460 manufacturing firms in Mexico, analyzing the data through confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation models based on covariance. The results obtained suggest that environmental regulations have positive effects on eco-innovation, and eco-innovation has positive effects on sustainable performance of manufacturing firms in the automotive industry. In this context, the results obtained allowed us to conclude that compliance with environmental regulations established by the public administration, by manufacturing firms in the automotive industry, improve both eco-innovation activities and sustainable performance of organizations. 

Exploring Sustainable Supply Chain Management Practice and Environmental Performance: A Systematic Review Perspective

Weather conditions transformation has exacerbated humanity challenges as nations continue to struggle between carbon reduction and rapid industrial economic development. Although, both developed and developing countries reaffirmed their solemn promise to mitigate existing carbon emission, research on sustainable development, eco-friendly, and low-carbon supply chain links remain unstudied. As a result, the study responds to the research interrogation: "Why and in what way are businesses adopting to sustainable strategies to promote sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) in their production?" In response, the researchers obtain and synthesis 19 literature papers for constructive analysis and interpretation from the Scopus database which has the reputation of housing peer-reviewed articles in a broader range of study disciplines. The findings indicate, it is imperative for organization to enhances their SSCM activities such as waste management and re-manufacturing, eco-friendly manufacturing and remanufacturing, logistics in reversal and networking plan, green manufacturing, green purchasing, green operation and low-carbon supply chains. Moreover, to maintain the supply chain operations for the global benefit, businesses must evaluate and acknowledge their primary sustainable risk activities from the previous through to the present, and the forthcoming structural plan.

Driving the future: Leveraging digital transformation for sustainable transportation

The transportation sector is currently experiencing a significant transformation due to the influence of digital technologies, which are revolutionizing travel, goods transportation, and interactions with transportation systems. This study delves into the possibilities and obstacles presented by digital transformation in the realm of sustainable transportation. Moreover, it identifies the most effective methods for implementing digital transformation in this sector. Furthermore, our analysis sheds light on the potential impacts of digital transformation on sustainable development and environmental performance indicators within transportation systems. We discover that digital transformation can contribute to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and increased resource efficiency, among other benefits. Nevertheless, we emphasize the potential risks and uncertainties associated with digital transformation, including concerns regarding data privacy, security, and ethics. Collectively, our research provides valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges presented by digital transformation in sustainable transportation. It also identifies best practices for successfully implementing digital transformation in this sector. The implications of our findings are significant for policymakers, businesses, and other stakeholders who aspire to drive the future of sustainable transportation through digital transformation.

Supply chain in transition navigating economic growth and environmental sustainability through education.

The growing interest in the Management of Eco-Friendly Supply Chains warrants this study. Green supply chain management (GSCM) is an approach to supply chain management (SCM) that takes into account environmental factors. Therefore, GSCM is vital in shaping the cumulative environmental effect of businesses engaged in supply chain operations. In addition, GSCM may help improve the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives. Manufacturing companies, particularly in developing nations like India, are trying to adjust essential procedures and supply chains because of the rising need to be ecologically sustainable. However, such efforts must be deployed strategically to be ecologically sustainable and economically successful. As a result, this study focuses on the relationship between green supply chain management and education that affect environmental sustainability and economic performance. As a further step toward more sustainable development, the mediating function of education is sustainable economic growth and environmental health. The data was collected by distributing a well-crafted questionnaire to manufacturing facilities in India. We employed PLS-SEM to analyze and interpret the data test hypotheses based on data from 415 replies. The findings point to cost and profit as the primary metrics of corporate success. Disposal of trash, usage of resources, and release of greenhouse gases are alternative measures of environmental sustainability. Distributed online links and in-person interviews with employees at companies throughout India who use GSCM procedures provided the basis for the study's primary data set. The data was gathered with the use of an organized survey form. The findings of tests conducted on the hypotheses were considered. According to this research, cost, profit, waste, resource, and GHG emission impacts vary depending on which GSCM techniques are implemented. Green supply chain management strategies significantly affect price, trash disposal, resource utilization, and GHG emissions. There was no discernible trend between GSCM methods and financial success. In addition to discussing the unique elements of sustainable supply chains and the limits of current research, this article also discusses how a company's bottom line will benefit monetarily from establishing a sustainable supply chain. This should inspire more study in this area. Our investigation revealed patterns and voids, and we used that information to outline a thorough plan for future GSCM studies. The research helps manufacturing company management improve their sustainable policies while providing policymakers with pointers.

Environmental Sustainability of Family Firms: A Meta-Analysis of Handprint and Footprint

Our meta-analysis investigates the environmental sustainability performance of family firms (FFs) distinguishing between environmental hand- and footprint and accounting for FF heterogeneity. Based on a sample of 87 primary studies comprising 118,538 firms, we find no significant difference between FFs and non-FFs regarding their overall environmental sustainability performance. Yet, distinguishing between environmental hand- and footprint, we show that FFs have a lower footprint than non-FFs but do not differ regarding their handprint. Firm size, being a public firm, and type of family involvement moderate the effects of FF status on environmental sustainability performance. Our research note extends prior meta-analytical evidence and contributes to a more fine-grained and nuanced understanding of the environmental sustainability performance of FFs. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.

An innovative approach to evaluating sustainable development performance: The case of Turkey

AbstractThe assessment of sustainable development necessitates precise productivity measurement. Existing literature reveals a wide array of methods employed for this purpose. However, these approaches give rise to concerns regarding the accurate assessment of both efficiency (EC) and technical (TC) changes. Additionally, the data used for productivity measurement are often subject to uncertainty. In response to these shortcomings in the existing literature, this study introduces the Environmental Fuzzy Malmquist Total Factor Productivity (EFM) index for productivity measurement. Within this framework, the study aims to assess Turkey's environmental sensitivity and sustainable development performance using the proposed EFM index. To achieve this goal, the study first constructs the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI), considering undesirable environmental pollution variables related to air, water, and soil pollution. Subsequently, the ESI is integrated with the Fuzzy Malmquist Total Factor Productivity Index (FM) to develop the new EFM index. The proposed integrated EFM index exhibits an enhanced ability to evaluate both EC and TC while addressing the challenges stemming from uncertainty. The proposed integrated EFM index indicates that the Marmara and Aegean regions of Turkey demonstrate the highest level of sustainable development performance. Finally, the study offers recommendations and policies to assist developing countries in enhancing their sustainable development performance.

Monitoring environmental sustainability in Japan: an ESGAP assessment

AbstractThis paper assesses the environmental sustainability of Japan by applying the environmental sustainability gap (ESGAP) framework, which builds on the concepts of strong sustainability, critical natural capital, environmental functions, and science-based reference values. The assessment is carried out using two indices of environmental sustainability (Strong Environmental Sustainability Index (SESI) and Strong Environmental Sustainability Progress Index (SESPI)) that provide a snapshot and a trend perspective on environmental sustainability performance and on progress toward it. The results reveal that Japan has not experienced significant changes in terms of aggregate environmental sustainability throughout the 2011–2017 period, but this is primarily a consequence of the mutually offsetting movements of different indicators. The country performs best for the human health and other welfare indicators, but worst for the sink function indicators such as the per-capita CO2 emissions and the eutrophication of fresh water. The indices also expose the main policy areas that Japan needs to strengthen to improve its environmental performance. They include issues such as tropospheric ozone pollution, which has long been discussed in scientific literature but never been a primal policy focus of the government until very recently.
